Description

Health information exchange (HIE) from inpatient psychiatric units of acute-care hospitals is critical to address the complex healthcare needs of patients with severe mental illness. Using national data, we found HIE from acute-care hospital inpatient psychiatric units in 2016 lagged far behind national hospital-HIE estimates. Hospital bed size and accountable care organization participation were associated with higher odds of sending HIE. More research is needed to understand HIE barriers for acute-care hospital inpatient psychiatric units.

Learning Objective: 1. Understand why health information exchange (HIE) from inpatient psychiatric units in acute-care hospitals may face more challenges than does HIE from other inpatient units (i.e., medical or surgical) in these same acute-care hospitals.
2. Learn whether HIE from acute-care hospital inpatient psychiatric units differed in 2016 compared to HIE sent from other units in these same acute-care hospitals.
3. Learn acute-care hospital characteristics associated with sending HIE from their inpatient psychiatric units.
