Description

Emergency department and hospital-based clinicians often operate in “open-loop” systems in which they do not see whether their initial diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making was correct—missing many potential learning opportunities. Electronic health records have the potential to provide clinicians with more systematic feedback of outcomes across transitions of care to support ongoing learning. We describe the development of such a system within an academic medical center using a commercial electronic health record.

Learning Objective: Understand how electronic health records can be used to support ongoing provider calibration of decision-making and be able to describe an implemented example of such a system
