Description

Introduction: 169 U.S. health systems now engage in OpenNotes: a movement to share clinical notes with patients. Few studies have focused on releasing notes during hospitalization, pediatrics, or parents/caregiver perspectives. Methods: From October-November 2018, 5 focus groups were conducted with Midwest children’s hospital stakeholders. Eight parents with experience caring for a hospitalized child composed the Parent group and were asked, in a 2-hour session, about their perspectives of the idea of deploying OpenNotes in the pediatric inpatient setting. Qualitative content analysis was conducted using Dedoose©. Results: Themes reflected anticipated benefits and challenges of releasing inpatient notes. The benefit most often mentioned was “Recap of information” and challenge, “Release of information before consultation with physicians.” Conclusion: Parents see themselves as part of the healthcare team, identifying potential benefits of and challenges to sharing notes with parents during their child’s hospitalization but also the impact on healthcare professionals who work alongside them.

Learning Objective: After participating in this activity the learner should be better able to

*characterize the possible benefits and challenges of viewing OpenNotes from the perspective of parents of pediatric patients
