Description

Alphanumeric text paging is useful for providing context in consult requests, but the most effective use of this limited medium is unknown. We examined 210 inpatient consult request pages for inclusion of “best practice” informational elements and correlated them to quality ratings. Most pages included contact information and reason for consult, but few included indication of urgency. In ordinal logistic regression, the most important element for predicting page quality was reason for consult.

Learning Objective: After participating in this session, the learner should be better able to define the recommended “best practice” elements for effective communication of subspecialty consult requests.
