Description

This study assesses the literature for standardized definitions and measures of clinical documentation burden among physicians utilizing electronic health record systems. We searched PUBMED from 1/1/1995 to 2/9/2019 for all English-language studies conducted in the United States on burden among physicians in mixed practice settings. We identified myriad time measures and proxies of burden. Evidence suggests greater attention needs to be paid to developing standardized methods to measure documentation burden.

Learning Objective: After participating in this session, the learner should be better able to:
● Evaluate the status of research on documentation burden among physicians and identify gaps regarding how EHR burden is defined and measured among physicians across subspecialties
● Demonstrate that research and evidence on EHR documentation burden is fragmentary
● Understand the need to develop standardized, validated measures of burden to facilitate comparability across studies and inform improvement
