Description

Strict adherence to antiretroviral therapy among persons living with HIV (PLWH) is important to sustain viral suppression, prevent progression to AIDS and opportunistic infections, improve overall health and reduce risk of sexually transmission to HIV-negative partners. Mobile technology is a potentially useful tool in self-management of HIV including medication adherence. We developed an HIV self-management app with real-time medication monitoring and explored PLWH’s experiences using the electronic pill bottle linked with the app. A total of 9 themes were identified in this study, demonstrating that patients who self-monitor their medication adherence and receive push-notification medication reminders through the electronic pill bottle connected to the app are encouraged and supported in medication adherence.
