Description

As the elderly population continues to grow, understanding how mHealth can be used to improve palliative care becomes increasingly important. We reviewed mobile apps designed to support palliative care patients and their caregivers. We searched three app stores with multiple terms, eliminated irrelevant and duplicate results, and evaluated apps using two published mHealth scales and palliative care guidelines. Most of the apps scored poorly across multiple measures, showing great opportunity for future technological improvements.

Learning Objective: Understand the current functionalities of commercially available, patient-facing mobile health apps targeted towards supporting palliative care patients and their caregivers
