Description

A web-based survey was launched to solicit response from African American women on the acceptability of using text messaging to manage anxiety and depression. The results of this exploratory study (N=101) showed low acceptance of using text messaging to communicate with a professional to receive help to manage anxiety and depression (< 50% endorsed). No statistically significant associations were found between age and agreement with the use of text messaging (all p > .05).

Learning Objective: After participating in this session, the learner should be better able to:
1. Understand the current burden of anxiety and depression among African American women, and disparity in mental health service utilization.
2. Discuss the use of text messaging and other telehealth approaches to increase access to mental health services.
