Description

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, and yet previous readmissions metrics did not account for this distinct patient population. The Comprehensive Cancer Center Consortium for Quality Improvement (C4QI) along with the Alliance of Dedicated Cancer Centers (ADCC), which includes Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), collaborated with the National Quality Forum (NQF) to develop NQF 3188: 30-Day Unplanned Readmissions for Cancer Patients. In light of the hallmark regulation and aligning with MSKCC’s mission, the team established an unplanned cancer readmissions data source enabling intuitive and robust operational and analytical dashboards.

Learning Objective: After reviewing the poster, the learner should be better able to:
- understand the recently finalized readmissions measure for cancer patients, and discuss and recommend several approaches on how to integrate the metric in operational decision-making.
- learn the challenges and potential solutions of outlining a more appropriate readmission benchmark inter- and intra-institution.
- learn the different dimensions in which readmissions can be analyzed and understand the implications and limitations of trends analysis, comparisons and enforced thresholds.
- formulate an approach on how to improve data democratization within organizations.
