Description

Referral of patients for counseling, and brief consultations by clinicians in office practices are effective in increasing cessation rates. We implemented an electronic intervention integrated within a commercial outpatient EHR at a large healthcare delivery system that allowed clinicians to make referrals to an existing cessation program by selecting a checkbox in the patient health record interface that generated a referral to the Center for Tobacco Control (CTC). We have shown that the number of clinicians actively using eReferral started rising after about a year after implementation.

Learning Objective: Readers will gain insight into the rollout of a new EHR tool that is designed to increase the number of referrals of identified smokers to cessation programs.
