Description

Interviews were conducted with nurses and physicians at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC). Participants were asked about their experiences with health information technology (IT) adaptation. Each transcript was coded independently by two researchers, and through iterative discussion, open codes were grouped into common categories to reflect the general theory of health IT adaptation processes. Codes were then compared to identify similarities and differences between nurse and physician perspectives. We grouped their perspectives into 4 main themes: adaptation factors, outcomes due to the general nature of health IT, outcomes from poor adaptation, and outcomes from adequate adaptation.

Learning Objective: After participating in this session, the learner should be better able to identify at least one factor associated with health IT adaptation and at least one similarity or difference between nurse and physician perspectives.
