Description

We developed an opioid decision support tool that displays an inpatient's 24 hour milligram morphine equivalent opioid usage to providers and recommends quantity of opioids to dispense at discharge. We included this tool in a surgical discharge order set, resulting in an increase in patients being discharged without any opioids and a reduction in quantity prescribed for those discharged with opioids. These practice changes did not increase repeat opioid prescriptions for this set of patients.

Learning Objective: After viewing and discussing this poster, the learner should be able to describe a decision support intervention that reduces prescription of opioids at hospital discharge, and understand challenges to implementation.
