Description

Clinical decision support (CDS) shapes provider behavior in part by signaling the legitimacy of a given clinical practice. Here, using interview data from primary care providers, we develop a conceptual model of the role of legitimacy in CDS. We posit multiple types of legitimacy that play a role in CDS, and we identify key moderating factors. Understanding the role of legitimacy in CDS may help developers design more effective and acceptable interventions.

Learning Objective: Describe the role of legitimacy in clinical decision support in relation to other functions of CDS (e.g. to inform, remind, educate)
Understand the multiple types of legitimacy that CDS can confer
Explain key moderating factors of the role of legitimacy
Place a proposed conceptual model of legitimacy in context of related sociotechnical models of CDS efficacy
