Description

Many studies have examined barriers and adherence to patient health portals in outpatient settings but not during hospitalization. Patients who declined to be part of an RCT on Patient Engagement were administered a 5-item survey with questions about age, gender, race and reasons for not participating. The survey was analyzed and answers categorized. Results demonstrated that admitted patients will not use patient health portals due to pre-occupation with health outcomes and negative perceptions of technology.

Learning Objective: After participating in this session the learner should be better able to identify the challenges and barriers in implementing and disseminating inpatient health portals in pre and post-surgical patient hospital population and be able to discuss iterative changes and interventions to increase adoption and adherence.
