Abstract Body: Many successful scientific careers will include a series of winding paths and seeming dead ends. In retrospect, a coherent sequence is often apparent, with seemingly irrelevant steps turning out to presage important breakthroughs. My path is no exception. Fortunately for me, there were enough successes for the ACMI Awards Committee to feel I am worthy of the Morris F. Collen Award. I have been asked to recount my story and will highlight some of the seeming loose ends and even failures that have eventually come together in productive ways. Perhaps others will see parallels in their own paths and find inspiration to continue towards find their own unified theory.
