Retrospective derivation of nurse-patient assignment data is feasible in hospitals lacking electronic assignment data. The derivation method utilizes data produced by automated medication dispensing cabinets. The nurse who dispensed the greatest number of medications for a patient during a shift is selected as the patient’s assigned nurse. The defined method produces high accuracy and serves as a facilitator for research at the nurse assignment level.
