Description

Prescription opioid use has more than tripled since the 2000s and accounts for ~24% of all U.S. opioid misuse-related deaths in 2017. Current prevalence of opioid misuse is ~57.4 per 10,000. Past research relied on structured data from International Classification of Disease Codes (ICD). We use natural language processing to estimate opioid-misuse prevalence in emergency departments using text and ICD codes. We found the true rate of opioid misuse in the emergency department is ~95 per 10,000 encounters.

Learning Objective: 1. Provide prevalence estimates of opioid-misuse encounters in the emergency department using clinical text and ICD codes.
2. Inform appropriate methods for searching and identifying clinical text using natural language processing.
