Associate Professor and Director of Academic Programs
Sue Boren, PhD, MHA is an Associate Professor and Director of Academic Programs in the School of Medicine’s Health Management and Informatics Department. Her educational background includes psychology, health administration, education, and health informatics. Dr. Boren directs the MHA program (CAHME accredited 50+ years) and the MS in health informatics program. Through her research, Dr. Boren investigates how informatics can be used to improve patient outcomes. Dr. Boren’s research interests include the use of both informatics and simulation in healthcare settings. She examines how mhealth, decision support, and interactive computerized education can be used to improve self-care behaviors among chronically ill patients. She also evaluates the effectiveness of simulation-based learning to amplify real experiences with guided ones in the education and training of healthcare professionals. Based on her research, Dr. Boren has contributed to numerous articles in the field of health informatics. Two of Dr. Boren’s articles have been recognized by the Yearbook of the International Medical Informatics Association as among the best health informatics studies. In addition to her scholarship, Dr. Boren has a history of service in her field. She has been a member and chair of the Research Committee of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. She is an editorial board member of The Diabetes Educator and Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology. Dr. Boren chairs the Health Informatics Accreditation Council for the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education where she is also an ex officio board member. Dr. Boren is also completing a second term of elected leadership on the executive committee of the Academic Forum for the American Medical Informatics Association.
