Description

The CPOE Evaluation Tool provides hospitals with an overall percentage of unsafe orders detected and a list of potentially fatal orders their EHR system failed to alert on. The mean overall score increased by 13.4% from 2017 to 2018. The percentage of fatal orders not alerted on, decreased from 24% in 2017 to 17% in 2018. Overall, hospitals alert on most common prescriber errors, but there is important room for improvement in alerting against potentially fatal orders.

Learning Objective: Understand that although computerized physician order entry systems are detecting the majority of unsafe medication orders, there are some that are still failing to alert on potentially fatal orders.
