Diabetes and prediabetes are prevalent in US and have a bidirectional relationship with periodontitis. Consequently, an integrated health care system facilitating referrals to appropriate health care providers could improve health outcomes. We estimate that (2.8 M) people with unmanaged HbA1C levels in the US could be referred by dental providers to medical providers for further evaluation, and (17.7 M) of adults with periodontitis could be referred by medical providers to dental providers for further evaluation.
