Crossing the Quality Chasm (1999), was a monumental publication featuring the need to utilize data and informatics to foster patient safety and quality while reducing and healthcare costs. Later, another goal - provider burden – was added creating the quadruple aim. The profession of nursing is poised to accept, understand, and utilize recommendations provided by the Institute of Medicine panel however, we have been slow to grasp the importance of data standardization and sharing.
