Doctor of Medicine is to physician as (fill in the blank) is to informatician. Can you solve that analogy by answering this seemingly simple question; what is the terminal degree for the field of health and medical informatics? The UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics has discovered the answer in creating a unique degree problem built for health informaticians who want a terminal degree in this specialized area of study. The 100% online Doctorate of Health Informatics, or DHI, serves as the only practice/applied terminal, health informatics program in both the U.S. and worldwide. The 2017 Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Leadership and Workforce Survey found that nearly 85% of all respondents reported to be in a management role – with almost half associating themselves with an executive management position. Furthermore, recent data highlights an increased demand for health informatics in various health care settings, systems and delivery models. This increased interest in informatics graduate education is a national trend and the DHI program aims to address those workforce needs by provided an advanced graduate education for informaticians in leadership roles. The DHI curriculum teaches informaticians about the importance of design, implementation and evaluation of quality improvement projects for health information technology and tools used within their health care systems. Students in the DHI program will explore and implement evidence-based practice via didactic courses and a robust, culminating translational project aimed at improving care delivery and ultimately, human health.
